Dr. Kaung's Salon: Poets as Witness in Wartime

Friday, December 1, 6;30-8:30 pm
Provocations: Poetry in a Time of War
Discussion and Reading with Sarah Browning, DC Poets Against War

James Baldwin often spoke of the writer as witness. He reminded us that a witness is different from an observer; a witness is often called upon to testify. Poets have always acted as witnesses in times of war. Sarah Browning will trace some of that history, reading excerpts inspired by past conflicts, and telling the story of Poets Against the War and its Washington, DC-based affiliate. She will also read a few poems from her forthcoming collection, Whiskey in the Garden of Eden.

Local poet Sarah Browning is the coeditor of D.C. Poets Against the War: An Anthology and coordinator of DC Poets Against War, which has been active since the first national day of poetry against the war, February 12, 2003. Poets Against War continues the tradition of socially engaged poetry by creating venues for poetry as a voice against war, tyranny and oppression.

Poet, economist, and short story/nonfiction writer Dr. Kyi May Kaung will moderate. See Kyi's blog for her poem linking Burma and Iraq.
