Dr. Kaung's Salon: Poets as Witness in Wartime

Friday, December 1, 6;30-8:30 pm
Provocations: Poetry in a Time of War
Discussion and Reading with Sarah Browning, DC Poets Against War

James Baldwin often spoke of the writer as witness. He reminded us that a witness is different from an observer; a witness is often called upon to testify. Poets have always acted as witnesses in times of war. Sarah Browning will trace some of that history, reading excerpts inspired by past conflicts, and telling the story of Poets Against the War and its Washington, DC-based affiliate. She will also read a few poems from her forthcoming collection, Whiskey in the Garden of Eden.

Local poet Sarah Browning is the coeditor of D.C. Poets Against the War: An Anthology and coordinator of DC Poets Against War, which has been active since the first national day of poetry against the war, February 12, 2003. Poets Against War continues the tradition of socially engaged poetry by creating venues for poetry as a voice against war, tyranny and oppression.

Poet, economist, and short story/nonfiction writer Dr. Kyi May Kaung will moderate. See Kyi's blog for her poem linking Burma and Iraq.

Free.

Photo Exhibit of Himalayas

Whispers from the Clouds: photographs of the Garhwal Himalayas

Meet the Artist Reception: Friday, November 17, 6:30 pm to 9 pm.

“I found my way to the Garhwal Himalayas through yoga. Studying Tantra and Avaita Vedanta in the Himalayan Tradition, I found sages, swamis and pandits who spoke of the inherent spirituality of the mountains, often referring to them as "living sages". Inevitably, my heart told me that it was time to experience this land for myself.

“So off I went to India, yoga mat and cameras in hand, with the intention of (re)connecting with my spiritual ancestral roots as well as my roots as an artist. As I ventured into the unknown territory of spiritual pilgrimage, high altitude and (mostly)foreign culture, I found myself having to consciously put the camera away for the direct experience of being present within the journey. And yet, the amazing beauty of this land and it's people spoke so compellingly to my artist's eye that I had to document some of it.

“These images barely begin to capture the incredible spirit of these mountains and the people who live there. My only hope is that they encourage everyone who is able, to visit the Himalayas and witness for themselves the spirit of these living Sages, allowing their songs of joy to whisper through all hearts, as they have whispered so sweetly through mine.”

Lisa Hartjen graduatedfrom the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991 with a BFA in photography.
