About Space 7:10 and Kefa Café
Founded in 2004 by artist Tom Block, Space 7:10 at Kefa Cafe offers a small gallery, a salon series, an intimate performance space. Amy Kincaid, an artist and consultant to nonprofits on fundraising and management, currently curates the space. Kyi Kaung, a poet and a political economist with an interest in international literature, activism and art, organizes and facilitates the ongoing Dr. Kaung’s Salon. Kefa Cafe owners Lene and Abeba Tsegaye have created a friendly atmosphere, strong sense of community, and successful small business. The cafe’s menu includes organic, free trade gourmet coffees, gelato, quiche, soup, sandwiches, and pastries.

IMPACT Silver Spring Gives Kefa Cafe and Space 7:10 Community Award

As reported in the Silver Spring Penguin:

"A schoolmaster, a PTA mom, a pair of artists and two coffee-brewing sisters received kudos from the community at Thursday night’s Impact Awards ceremony.

"More than 200 people streamed through a crowded NOAA exhibit hall on East-West Highway to recognize the civic contributions of Richard Crump (above), Emie Mercier Cadet, artists Tom Block and Amy Kincaid, and sisters Lene and Abeba Tsegaye. Each received an award from Impact Silver Spring, a civic organization..."

In this picture (taken by painter Nihal Kececi), Abeba is thanking the artists who have presented work, the people who invite the artists and presenters, and all the customers who have come to experience the art, performance, and salon talks. I am up next to speak, looking over her shoulder at her speaking notes and realizing she's saying everything I had planned to say. —Amy

What is 7:10, anyway?

The name of our gallery space didn't come from the size of the room 7x10. I'm not at all sure the room is, in fact, that large! The name didn't come from the time 7:10...or not exactly.

Tom Block, whose idea it was to create the alternative art space within Lene and Abeba Tsegay's friendly cafe, noticed something odd about the Ethiopian clock hanging on the wall. Although it works, in the sense that the long wooden arm ticks, the time never changes. The time is always set at 7:10.

On Friday evenings, when we showcase artists, writers, performers, and activists, we have stumbled into a pattern of beginning the show right about 7:10pm. We like for folks to come before that to meet, greet, and eat.

The Music of Tin Pan Alley

May 18, 6:30 to 8:30pm
Dr. Kaung’s Salon: A Taste of Tin Pan Alley
Novelist and playwright Leon Levenson will discuss, play selections, and sing (a bit).

During the years of roughly 1885 through the 1930s, and some scholars say, even into the 1950s, musical tastes evolved dramatically. The great popularity of the sentimental lovesong was increasingly challenged by a growing interest in jazz and then rock and roll. Leon will discuss this evolution and invite discussion of the changing life styles and values that it represented. Along the way, he will share some of the music of greats such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and others as performed by artists such as Bessie Smith, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Billy Eckstine, and Mel Torme.

Leon Levenson is a retired English teacher and technical writer who now writes plays. His current projects focus on plays that combine drama and dance.
