STATEMENT

As a designer working in an early childhood education institution, I work with letters, color, and shapes on a daily basis to help develop children's visual literacy. I am interested in the design of writing systems, in particular the shapes that are used in the construction of our modern roman alphabet fonts. My work attempts to examine how far written symbols or graphemes can be distorted by using similar basic elements that make geometric san-serif typefaces, such as Futura, ITC Avant Garde, Century Gothic, Gotham, or Spartan.

I am attempting to explore the duality of written language to challenge aspects of human visual identification; in which familiar objects are transmuted to minimal shapes, possibly contradicting what is represented.Through the use of visual graphetics (the study of the physical features of written language), geometric shapes and color I have extracted parts of the roman alphabet to create a very personal and enigmatic code.

This code offers just enough familiarity to encourage viewers to see beyond the shapes and colors, encouraging them to attempt to solve my puzzles for the narrative. This changes the position of the audience from spectator to participant. They may or may not be rewarded, in that some of my work may not be accessible for solving, or that what they find may cause pause for further contemplation.

Thank you
