My earliest attempts at photography as a youngster gravitated towards the everyday: random storefronts and taverns, gas stations and garages. As my skills improved in my adolescence, my vision wandered into a combination of non-cohesive pictorialist and surrealist regions that in the end had no appeal. My education exposed me to the works of Atget, Evans, and others and quickly steered me back to where I began. When I mastered the view camera at age 19 I found the almost perfect tool to complement the directness of my early images, and returned to a realism-based vision.

Since that time I have prodigiously worked at documenting what I term the American

Vernacular: things that seem mundane or commonplace to others yet define our existence. Large format view cameras with color transparency medium are utilized, both for total image control and because they facilitate a kind of slower way of seeing that is a hallmark of my work.

Molly grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, and in her youth also lived in Sudan, Romania, the Czech Republic and New Zealand. She graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1983 with a BA in Anthropology and minor in Art History, and from George Washington University in 1989, with an MA in Museum Studies and Anthropology. Molly worked ten years in the Departments of the Director and Anthropology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. She has also had various jobs in education, including teaching art. Molly moved with her family (husband, Tony, and children, Nathaniel and Kelly) to Tempe, Arizona, in 2003, after ten years in London. Molly's love of desert plants and art led her to enroll in the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens Art and Illustration Program in 2004. She received her botanical illustration certification in November, 2010. Molly worked in the DBG herbarium under the direction of botanist, Wendy Hodgson, from 2008 to March of this year. Illustrations projects include: the Grand Canyon Rare and Sensitive Plants Project, Arizona Sclerocacti for the final volume of Intermountain Flora for the New York Botanical Gardens, and two Grand Canyon Mentzelia species new to science and published, or to be published, in Brittonia. Molly moved with her family to Sydney, Australia, in March. She looks forward to illustrating the flora of Australia and plans to seek opportunities teaching botanical illustration.

[This is] a poster art "retrospective" with different youth designed posters made over the last 5 years (I guess that qualifies for 'retrospective' in youth-years)
Most of the posters have to do with different community themes including immigrant rights and teen pregnancy prevention. It's a good mix of funny posters and more moving/serious ones. Also included will be some smaller framed pictures of the youth actually working on these projects to highlight their authorship and Gandhi Brigade's work.

Goddess Soul is a collage series that is about celebrating the feminine - mind, body, creativity and spirit. It is a series that recognizes the "goddess" that exists within all women and insights that we learn as women that are uniquely ours.

A portion of all sales from this exhibition will be donated to CARE's programs focusing on empowering women in poverty.

About the Artist:
Sharon J. Burton is a Metro DC area visual artist creative entrepreneur and independent curator. Since 2007, Ms. Burton's artworks has been exhibited in art galleries and venues across the East Coast including the Montpelier Arts Center (Laurel, Maryland), Galerie Myrtis (Baltimore, Maryland), Vivant Art Collection (Philadelphia, PA), Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba House (New York, NY) and Mason Murer Fine Art (Atlanta, Georgia). Works by Ms. Burton are included in private collections of noted art collectors in Baltimore, Silver Spring, Maryland, Metro Washington, DC and Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Burton works out of her home art studio Fort Washington, Maryland.

“I am influenced by natural and the spiritual world, especially representations of beliefs and customs in a variety of cultures. I choose the appropriate medium, whether painting, mixed media, collage, or photography from the “visions” which guide me in during the creative process.“

Starting November 9, Adam Dwight will display gouache paintings of new characters at Kefa Cafe in downtown Silver Spring, accompanied by a 'cafe residency,' in which Dwight will accept insights and ideas on the characters and generate new drawings based on audience input received. The artist will complete the new drawings during business hours at a workstation inside the cafe for the duration of the show.

Guidelines:

1) The audience can submit a shape, concept, sentence, word or drawing on posted sheets next to each work displayed.

2) The artist will accept up to 5 ideas per character and will generate up to 10 drawings per character, further refining the character's narrative.

3) New drawings will be displayed with the characters for the duration of the show.

4) The artist will accept coffee from other customers during residency hours.

5) The artist will share images of his progress during residency hours via Facebook / Twitter.

Birds on the Block

The exhibit will feature colorful mosaics and an eclectic mix of handmade bird-themed greeting cards created with recycled materials by Arts on the Block’s 21 most recent high school-aged apprentice artists.

Opening reception: Friday, September 10, 2010 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at the café.
Light refreshments will be provided compliments of Kefa Cafe.

The artwork for sale and on display was created by participants in Arts on the Block’s recently completed Pour You Art Out workshop. The theme for this exhibit was chosen because birds are a symbol of freedom common to most cultures. Artist and arts educator Carien Quiroga and her assistant, Rachel Gelenius, led the six-week workshop.

Arts on the Block is a nonprofit organization that provides paid opportunities and job training to high school age youth from Montgomery County. Participants in Arts on the Block work with established artists/mentors on publicly and privately commissioned artwork and entrepreneurial projects.

Space 7:10 Theater Company Presents New Play in Fringe Festival

Calliope Arts & Theatre L.L.C. is proud to present the world premiere of John Morogiello’s A Thing For Redheads as a part of the Fifth Anniversary Capital Fringe Festival.

The production will enjoy five performances at the Warehouse (1019 7th Street NW, Washington, DC) from July 11 to 24.

A Thing For Redheads is a brooding comedy about two brothers whose lives are overturned when they are asked to ghostwrite the autobiography of a young, pop singer. “We are very excited to launch Calliope Theatre & Arts with this production,” declares founder and producer Leon Levenson, “The script is funny, which everyone expects from something by John Morogiello; but it’s also emotional, which is a departure.” The cast includes (in alphabetical order) Lori Boyd, Jim Gagne, Ian Blackwell Rogers, and
Charlene V. Smith. The play is directed by Juliana Avery.

Author John Morogiello is a Playwright in Residence with the Maryland State Arts Council.

Susan Hwang and Maria Sonevytsky switch fluidly between accordion/keys and hobo drum kit while Mia Pixley holds it down on the cello as the unconventional power trio harmonizes, Andrews-Sisters-style, about planning, worldviews and works of literature, with the occasional swerve into a Carpathian mountain stomp. Their debut album, The Birth and Death of Meaning, was released in March of this year. It's produced by Franz Nicolay (formerly of The Hold Steady) and features great guest musicians including Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls and Ed Pastorini of 101 Crustaceans. They've toured several times in Europe and once in Asia in addition to regular shows at home in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They just completed their first West Coast U.S. tour this spring. 2 out of 3 members of The Debutante Hour have roots in the D.C. area. Susan Hwang grew up in Rockville, MD and "our" Howard Feinstein was her first blues piano teacher.

Danydany is Dan Gower and Dany Naierman playing their originals songs in English and Spanish, accompanying themselves on the cuatro. Their influences range from Silvio Rodriguez to the Indigo Girls to Lucinda Williams. They've been captivating audiences in Brooklyn and Manhattan since they formed in October of 2009.

ASTT clients, immigrants living in and around Baltimore and Silver Spring, present artwork from the art therapy group Kitchen Stories, led by Art on Purpose Resident Artist Julie Lin. Using food as a focal point, clients gathered each week to share stories about cooking, eating, and family. Clients illustrated their experiences in their home countries and their lives in America now through their collage-style artwork, their words (often translated from their native language), or in their recollection of a recipe from their home country.

A few pieces of work from ASTT’s Fall 2009 Healing Images photography group will also be displayed at Space 7:10. This year, renowned photojournalist Monica Lopossay led the group to explore their worlds through digital photography – beginning with camera fundamentals and then choosing images to capture in their daily lives that invite reflection. Not only are the photographs powerful, but the survivors’ words of reflection continue to resonate as a testament to their inner strength.

ASTT is proud to present both of these projects. Please join us for this exhibit and the gallery talk to learn more about what we do and how this unique group of individuals lives in the United States.

A mixed media collage work with seven strips that represent the seven Baha'is who are currently imprisoned in Iran, due to their faith. A Baha'i prayer for aid and assistance overlays and unites the collage. From a distance it appears as a solid white painting, but as you get closer the details emerge.

Kyi May Kaung (Kefa Café)

Dr. Kaung, a graduate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, is currently a member of the TAN or Technical Advisory Network of the Exile Government of Burma. She is also a well-known poet and painter. She is sharing a portrait of the Burmese Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Anne Marchand (Kefa Café)

The paintings refer to the energy of the cosmos to create and to destroy. We as human beings have a reflective ability to direct our energies, the Microcosm reflects the Macrocosm and vice versa. In our ability to discern we will make the right choices. The work is created in conjunction with Project RENEW, the first comprehensive management approach undertaken in Vietnam to restore the environment and neutralizethe effects of war.

"Fire On The Bayou" is a memoir / history of my civil rights cases from back in the day, including prosecutions of the Ku Klux Klan, racially-motivated police brutality, cross-burnings, etc.

It also has a couple of more personal chapters about what it was like for me in the Deep South doing this stuff, how I got into it, etc.

The last chapter is sort of a review of civil rights with an eye toward where we are now, and what the current focus is.

At 25, when she exhibited in Silver Spring, she had this to say about the "third eye," also the title of one of her compositions: "Art gives power and protection It's a third eye and if you use it wisely it can tell you what life is all about." Mame is now 29. A filmmaker has started working on a film about Mame.

Artist Statement
Painting is my joy as well as my release of emotion within me. I started at the age of nine years old doing water colors after receiving a water color set from "Santa". But I later discovered that watercolor was just a door for me to eventually open to the world of acrylic. As I continue my love affair with acrylic I find that painting has allowed me to experiment with texture and bold color that bursts out from my soul. My art is bold, beautiful and free. My art represents love, life and me.

Marshetta Davis is an abstract artist who focuses on human figures and complex color assortment. Davis is an self taught visual artist who primarily works with acrylic and water color. The artwork of Marshetta Davis was born from feelings of depression. She began to see the beauty of the world around her. Her artwork is focused on the simple motions of humans and the color that blankets our earth.

Artistic vision comes from many points of view. Everyone needs a place to create. Established in 2006, Studio In-Sight aims to bring space and inspiration to artists who may be outside the mainstream. Artists of the Studio In-Sight are clients at St. Luke’s House, a psychiatric rehabilitation facility in Montgomery County Maryland that serves those living with a chronic and persistent mental illness. The studio is a part of the Life Skills Program whose mission is to guide, train, and empower the clients in a social and supportive atmosphere.

The studio is dedicated to artists who want to work as artists. Here artists come together to work, explore and discover their creativity. Every artist needs a window, a viewing. The studio works to provide every opportunity for art to be seen by the public and purchased.

"During the Saffron Revolution of September 2007 in Burma, I painted these oil portraits and made these 'life extenders' of papier mache. In the viscious clampdown that followed the monks marching in the streets chanting the metta sutra, many monks were arrested and killed. The monks' leader was arrested in Nov. 07 during the UN Human Rights Rapporteur's visit. 'Life entenders' are decorated tree branches that sick people offer at Buddhist shrines to 'prop up the banyan tree.'" -- Kyi May Kaung

Kyi May Kaung has been a professional Burma watcher for over 15 years and has worked in the Burmese democracy movement overseas for over a decade. From 1997-2001 she worked as Senior Research Analyst and Broadcaster at Radio Free Asia and from 2001-2004 with The Burma Fund as Sr. Research Associate. Currently she consults about the Burmese political economy. She came to the United States on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1982, after teaching 20 years at the Institute of Economics in Rangoon. She is on the boards of the Burmese Refugee Project and Burma Economic Watch.

A successful poet, Kyi has been painting professionally since 1999 and paints in acrylics and oils on canvas, and pencils, oil crayons, acrylics and water colors on paper. She also makes collages and 3-D constructions from found objects.

Her exhibit "Cut and Paste" is currently on display at Suriya Gallery, Huay Keaw Road, Chiangmai, Thailand. In March she had a show Splash, Drip, Pour in Ubud, Bali and showed her art also at Hotel Arthur in Helsinki in June. This is her 11th one-woman show (her first was called Flux at the Foundry Gallery in Washington, DC.); her 4th in S.E. Asia and her third in Thailand.

Bergner based the ideas for the mural on interviews he conducted with three refugees who live in Maryland. His mural explores the personal stories of the their homelands while celebrating the culture and traditions there.

The “Global Refugee Mural” is part of the Action Ashé! Global Mural Project, founded by artist Joel Bergner. Through this project, Joel creates colorful, intense murals with social and cultural themes in cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Baltimore, Brazil and Peru. His projects have included solo work, youth projects, and he has directed a series of murals by international artists in DC. Aside from his art, Joel has done community-based work with emotionally disturbed teenagers, foster youth, the homeless, and the mentally ill, and has lived and worked in Central America, the Caribbean, and in the famous shanty town “City of God” in Brazil.

Funded through a grant from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, the project has a partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC)’s local Refugee Resettlement Center in Silver Spring.

A longtime Silver Spring resident, was the first African American to serve on the Montgomery County School Board, and later served for many years in a governor-appointed position at the Maryland School for the Deaf. He retired from an administrative position in the United States Public Health Service.

In WWII He served our country as a soldier in the army's 92nd Infantry Division in the European theater and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement and a Combat Infantryman Badge for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy. Those soldiers were known as the Buffalo Soldiers in a unit made up of African Americans. He wrote the book in 1947 after he returned from the war. He was about 23 then. He was 19 when he was drafted and assigned to the 92nd Infantry all black Buffalo Soldiers unit.

Healing Images: Creative Expressions of Survival

In 2003, the Healing Images program was developed at Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma to help heal the psychological and emotional scars of torture survivors through the use of digital photography. Working closely with asylum seekers who have fled torture and persecution in some of the world’s most troubled countries, the program harnesses, the healing and empowering powers of creative photographic expression. Participants are provided digital cameras and basic instruction in a supportive, therapeutic setting, and encouraged to use the camera to explore their inner worlds and outer realities. Photographs are taken and downloaded while technical fears are conquered; the resulting images are shared, discussed and written about by survivors – a cathartic process that offers those who have suffered unspeakable truths the opportunity to find their voice and vision again.

The program is performed in close collaboration with therapists, a photography instructor and volunteers. Through a series of weekly photography classes this program offers survivors of torture and severe trauma a unique opportunity to creatively reflect on their past, examine their present and build upon their strengths to arrive at a new place of greater peace and healing. Holding the camera in one’s hands, choosing its subject, organizing the frame, pressing the shutter, expressing one’s self, marveling at the results, and freeing the tangle within – all powerful therapeutic steps helping to increase an individual's sense of him or herself as active survivor rather than passive victim.

Each survivor’s images are integrated into their ongoing individual talk therapy work at ASTT, and (if individually desired) publicly presented in exhibitions and published in a variety of media venues as a means of heightening public concern and support for survivors and the plight of torture survivors everywhere.

DCIC Jonathan Matis. Mike Sebastian. Ben Azzara. The DC Improvisers Collective is a quartet exploring the intersection of jazz, contemporary composition and rock music. Their current lineup features Ben Azzara (drums), Jonathan Matis (guitar), and Mike Sebastian (reeds). These musicians come together from diverse backgrounds, bringing experience from performing in rock bands and jazz groups, as well as post-classical composition.

With ears wide open, they craft intricate compositions on the fly. Although the common metaphor for group improvisation often seems to be conversation, this metaphor fails to capture the true real-time, simultaneous collaboration that fuels the work. Equal parts tightrope act and group meditation, the ensemble explores the fertile territory of surprise just beyond the boundary where words fail. Drawing on the visceral energy and immediacy of rock music, along with the spontaneous creativity and subtlety of the jazz tradition, DCIC is able to forge new music that possesses both great intensity and mindful nuance.

The music of DCIC has found receptive ears in the rock world, for example they performed several concerts during 2007 as the backing band for Joe Lally (of Fugazi). DCIC also finds themselves rooted firmly in the jazz world; they have performed alongside many of the nation's cutting-edge improvising musicians as well as performing with Blue Note recording artist Greg Osby.

In this class you will learn how to develop your professional plan as an artist and jumpstart your creative career, culminating in a juried exhibition at the end of the term. There will be discussion of design theory, how to critique your work, implementing changes that will make the creative work more successful, and how to select and prepare your artwork for submittal to the juried show. There will be a class on matting and framing work for exhibition as well as a class on developing your business plan, identity development, and public relations. Finally, you will prepare and host the opening reception at the gallery. You will be a working creative professional! Tuition waiver applies; seniors pay fee only.

Authentic Contemporary Art Joins Inside Design Radio

Sharon J. Burton, Founder and Creative Director of Authentic Contemporary Art and Space 7:10 artist (Nov/Dec 2008) will join the Inside Design Internet Radio Show once a month, beginning, January 23, 2009 to provide a 10-15 minute segment entitled: "Inside Art," that will provide listeners with visual art collecting tips and information.

In 2008, she launched a podcast series, entitled "Authentic Art Visions: The ArtCast" which features interviews with a variety of artists and art professionals on a bi-weekly basis. She is an artist, curator and promoter of emerging contemporary artists in the Washington, DC area.
Sharon has provided art advisory services to individual clients and through art collecting workshops since 2005.

Bobbi Kittner's work to be exhibited this month at Annmarie Gardens in Solomons, Maryland. She says: Annmarie Gardens is a wonderful art and sculpture center about an hour and a half away from the Washington DC area. Visiting Annmarie is a wonderful experience for the whole family and truly a great day trip away. They have actitivities for kids of all ages and a wonderful outdoor sculpture garden. Visiting Solomons Island is also incredibly wonderful.

Robert Brooks grew up in Lansing, MI. He attended music school in Los Angeles, and later lived in New Orleans, Washington, DC., Mexico City and Austin, TX. He returned to the DC metro area in 2002 and currently lives in Silver Spring. He has always enjoyed taking photos but it was during a trip to Mexico several years ago that he began taking photography more seriously. The photos in this display combine three of his loves; travel, nature and photography.

"CALL FOR CREATIVITY We are beginning the design phase for community mosaic murals for the exterior and interior of the Takoma Park Community Center (Maple and 410).

Community Meeting Thursday November 6th, 7:30 pm
Artists and non-artists are urged to be present as we begin to explore themes and locations for a permanent public work that represents our community. This will be a chance to meet Arturo Ho, our lead artist, to have a brief overview of mosaic arts, and to voice ideas for the community center exterior. The art of mosaic has great potential for public works in Takoma Park, and this project offers a chance to learn and take part.

Joe Wall, technical director for the spectacular mosaic mural at the American Museum of Visionary Art in Baltimore, will give an overview of their process, materials and methods, and be available to answer questions about the art & craft of mosaic. We must cross over a threshold in order to attain transformation. Our passage of yearning affects the arena we enter and that which we leave behind. In this series I am investigating spiritual architecture. I make ink drawings on site, and I research photographs and writings. Then, using painting and etching, I create images by layering and carving out space, windows and doors. As you cross the visual threshold of my images and enter these arenas, I hope that they will encourage contemplation and transformation.
The works in this exhibit are mixed, oil-based materials on primed 100% cotton rag paper, and intaglio prints, some with chine colle or hand-coloring.

Pyramid Atlantic: A Community Store and Gallery, at 924 Ellsworth Drive in downtown Silver Spring. Take the virtual tour.

Pyramid Atlantic: A Community Arts Store showcases affordable prints and artist books, handmade paper, and the work of local painters, ceramicists, jewelers and as well as other artists and crafters. The store also features a gallery with rotating works on display. Profits from sales at the store will benefit local artists and the arts programs at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. Store activities will include wine tastings, arts activities for children, and demonstrations.

"I had the pleasure of learning about Kyle's work when we were in a group show entitled: 'Connections: Collage and Assemblage,' at the Carroll County Arts Center in Westminster, MD. I was struck by his pared-down color aesthetic, combined with the personal manner in which he built his assemblages. His color sense, while working with a very restrained palette, was refined and evocative (two words not often associated with nearly monochromatic work) and his small boxes were all built from materials salvaged from his 19th century Baltimore townhouse. While referential to Joseph Cornell, his work seemed even more personal, as it used very little of the kitsch and banal images taken from pop culture, working to build a more intimate sense out of the pieces of his everyday existence.

Between that time -- March 2007 -- and now, Kyle has become a new father, and I am excited to see how this rather life-changing inflection point in his path has effected his work. It is a pleasure to have Kyle agree to travel down to Silver Spring from Baltimore, and share his unique vision with us here at Space 7:10."
