Shooting Water, A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and Filmmaking
by Devyani Saltzman
Writer and historian Bijan C. Bayne will facilitate discussion of the book he says is the “best non-fiction book I've read this century.”
“Shooting Water" by photojournalist Devyani Saltzman details a year the the-collegiate Toronto native spent working on a film crew with her estranged mother, award-winning Indian documentary director Deepa Mehta. The book addresses Indian politics, Hindu widows, divorce, biracial identity (Saltzman's dad is a Canadian Jew), romantic love, and the difficult decision Devyani made as a pre-teen to "choose" which parent with whom she would live.
