Working mainly in pen and ink, 25-year-old Mame has been making art since she was a little girl, encouraged by her mother, Diana. She derives her themes from mystical, fantasy worlds. The current collection features linear pen and ink images that she calls "Elementals," which suggest themes of fire, water, earth, and spirit. Mame, who has Asperger's syndrome and bipolar disorder, uses art as a place to share her dreams. Mame received an Award of Excellence from VSA arts in 2004. She says, "Art gives power and protection It's a third eye and if you use it wisely it can tell you what life is all about."
Diana N'Diaye is a fiber artist, jewelry designer, and a folklorist at the Smithsonian's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Her quilted hangings and digital prints are inspired by folktales, childhood memories, maps, and events in the world. Exhibit co-sponsored by Empowered Women International. www.ewint.org

Note from Marty Hindel

Dear Friends,

The Ocio Jazz duet (myself and guitarist Mark Caruso) will be at Kefa Cafe in Silver Spring, MD, this Friday, February 9, 2007, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. No cover charge.

I'm excited about the intimate feeling in this tiny little cafe that literally seats about 20, as well as the chance to do some duet work with Mark for the first time since our debut gig back in September. Kefa's address is below.

If you like the local community feel, a cozy atmosphere and creative surroundings, Kefa is the place. Come enjoy a cup of organic coffee, a pastry and live jazz, and combine your trip with dinner at one of Silver Spring's many fine restaurants during Silver Spring Restaurant Week. (Details below)
