Poet Anne Becker to Host Reading in Takoma DC

In the Beginning: Creation Stories from Around the World
An evening of poetry at The Culture Shop

Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 5:30 pm
The Culture Shop, 341 Cedar St., NW, DC - adjacent to Takoma Metro station
(202) 726-2211

Anne Becker, poet laureate of Takoma Park (MD), hosts and reads with Naomi Ayala, Nan Fry, Anne Sheldon, Ninie G. Syarikin, exploring the theme of creation: mythic, cultural, biologic, physical, and artistic.

These poems encompass beginnings—the birth of matter, the universe, living things.

“In the first days, in the very first days,
In the first nights, in the very first nights,
In the first years, in the very first years,
When everything needed was brought into being,
When everything needed was properly nourished,
when bread was baked in the shrines of the land
And bread was eaten in the homes of the land . . .”
(from Inanna: Queen of Heaven and Earth, translated by Diane Wolkstein and Samuel Kramer from a Sumerian cuneiform text ca. 2000BC into English).

They tell stories which locate the human place in the cosmos and delineate human values, which give meaning to our lives.

Note: Anne will be signing and celebrating the release of her new book at Kefa Cafe on Sunday, February 10, 3:30 to 5:30pm.
