"In Halsman’s series of Jumpology photos, he wanted to capture the moment at which the model is most natural. Fascinated by this concept of reflexes and catching people off guard, I want to show the viewer the in between states of surprise reactions by throwing objects at my subjects through photographs. I want to prolong the awkward facial expressions that only occur for a split second of time. I want to show the viewer something that cannot be made on demand, but only by surprise. An evening discussion with James Harden Daugherty, longtime Silver Spring resident, former Buffalo Soldier, and author of The Buffalo Saga. Sponsored by Silver Spring Books, which will have copies of the book available for sale.

James Harden Daugherty is a longtime Silver Spring resident. He built the family home in Silver Spring many years ago. He and his wife raised their four sons here. He was the first African American to serve on the Montgomery County School Board, and later served for many years in a governor appointed position at the Maryland School for the Deaf. He retired from an administrative position in the United States Public Health Service.

In WWII He served our country as a soldier in the army's 92nd Infantry Division in the European theater. Those soldiers were known as the Buffalo Soldiers in a unit made up of African Americans. Mr. Daugherty was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement and a Combat Infantryman Badge for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy.

Indie Film Event Featuring Creatives

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is proud to announce the Washington, DC film premiere of Beautiful Losers on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the historic American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Road, Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.

Notable guests include Delegates Sheila Hixson and Heather Mizeur and State Senator Jamie Raskin, County Councilmember Valerie Ervin and art collector, Dr. Michael Pollack. The screening is the focal point of the annual fundraiser, which includes a question and answer session with special guests Dr. Martin Irvine and Roger Gastman, followed by the silent art auction and reception.

The silent art auction will include work by artists Art Spiegelman, William T. Wiley, William Christenberry, Hung Lui, Joyce Scott, Ken Aptekar, Benito Huerta, Ann Crain, John Shipman, Michael Gross, Cynthia Connolly, Mary Heiss, Iona Rozeal Brown, Michael Murphy, Kelly Towles, Christopher Lavoie, Lisa Marie Thalhammer, Decoy, Jonny Bess/Monk, Aniekan, Rebecca Katz and Ellen Hill.

In addition, attendees have a chance to drive away in a brand new Honda Civic Hybrid by simply purchasing a raffle ticket along their event ticket. Sorry, raffle tickets can not be purchased separately.
